Dual-Boot Windows XP/7RC
by: Carl Johnson

Michael,

Dual-boot is absolutely possible. I presently has a dual-boot setup with XP and Win 7 RC. And as you suggested, I'm bouncing back and forth reinstalling/reconfiguring my apps in the Win 7 boot, little by little, day by day. Because I have the majority of my apps on a D: and F: partition, I've developed a system where I can sort of fool Win 7 into using the already installed app version (and data). After installing a clean version to a P: partition (the P: install sets the paramenters up in the Win 7 registry and on the Win 7 %windows% partition), I make some registry pointer modifications. Of course this requires serious registry modifications and I DO NOT recommend anyone else try what I do.

When I receive my pre-ordered copy of Win 7 Professional in October, I'll be setting up a tri-boot system, which I've heard is also possible.

Carl I may have made a mistake
by: Michael L Hereid Sr

But system image may only be on Win7 Pro and Ultimate-according Paul Thurott's web site-all versions from Started to Ultimate include it
( http://www.winsupersite.com/win7/win7_skus_compare.asp )
But I checked on MS website and only the 2 versions have shadow copy. Since I do not get my copy of Win7 Home Premium till October 22-we'll have to wait and see.

Carl If I may make a few suggestions
by: Michael L Hereid Sr

I also build my own systems and have since 1986. The only Windows I have never used is 2K.
Thing is what do you do if a HD fails with all your files and information.
So why not install as a dual boot-I fairly sure you'll be able to do this (I will recieve a ugrade version of Win 7 on or about October 22. I will be installing a a XP PC and will let everyone know if it is possible.
One thing that Win 7 nearly all versionshas that will be very useful is shadow copy. Say your harddrive with Xp and all your data fails. With shadow copy once you have a new HD - will restore you system to what it was before the falure.
Then over time you can slowly install all ypur applications over to Win7 but still access to all your applications and data on XP.
You may find your more productive and like WIn7.

WINDOWS XP TO WINDOWS 7
by: Carl Johnson

While a clean install-upgrade might work for some who have relatively clean systems, I have a complex system that I've built over many years, with many necessary applications. Each day I spend a several hours reinstalling (as in upgrading) these apps to my Windows 7 RC. My clean install-upgrade from XP to 7 cannot be measured in hours or days, but weeks. And I'm sure I'm not alone. I've been upgrading versions of Windows since 1992 and have not experienced the problems that some folks report (with upgrades carrying over garbage apps and old problems), but then it depends on each individuals system (I build mine from the tower up...I've never owned a brand-name desktop PC). In my opinion, it is well worth Microsoft's effort to build an upgrade engine into its new operating systems (as they did until Vista came a knocking). In my case alone, they will loose two "upgrade" sales because I'd rather leave two of my systems running XP than go thru two more Windows 7 clean install-upgrades.

It maybe a hassle but a necessary hassle
by: Michael L Hereid Sr

The kernal of XP and Win 7 is completly differant-meaning the way each OS handles and installs the program is completely differant. Which would make writting a upgrade engine more difficult than needed.
Besides I have more than a few of the problems that can happen with a upgrade instead of a clean install-it is for this reason I NEVER do a upgrade but do a clean install.
