I am a UNIX system administrator with 26 years of experience, and have been installing Linux on laptops professionally, starting with 486 based Toshiba Protege systems for the Computer Security Engineering Team at the Air Intelligence Agency here in San Antonio, TX in 1989.
On my Dell Mini 10, Windows 7 RC1 works beautifully with the newer Intel 500 video chip, whereas the Ubuntu 9.04 netbook remix install was terrible on this laptop.
Additionally, I bought the military version of Office 2007 at Ft. Sam Houston’s PX and it’s working great with Windows 7 on this laptop, whereas open office didn’t do very well.
As a retired military IT specialist, I really appreciate the care that went into making the RC1 of Windows 7 work well with newer hardware, and for the price break you’ve extended to me and my fellow GI’s.
I’ve tried FreeBSD and OpenSolaris on this Dell mini 10 as well, and no other OS works as well as Windows 7.
Thank you Microsoft for all the hard work that’s gone into this OS.
