unexpected shutdowns and bsods

after leaving my laptop on with the lid closed or putting it to sleep and then turning it back on, i'll get errors saying that windows unexpectedly shut down.

also, within two days of having 7, i got two blue screens when i tried opening chrome.

after about two weeks with 7, i tried logging onto windows today. i typed in my password, pressed enter and it got stuck on the "welcome" screen.

reformatting computer to out-of-box settings and giving it another try.
