Windows 7 User Submissions

When i m connected to the internet, windows automatically downloads its updates called Windows Update.

Now, my question is,
1) does this update process slow down my net speed?
2) i m experiencing that my net speed is really slow in Win7. what can i do ?

plz if anyone can tell me in details.
