Quick Launch bar

Of course none of this "pinning" replaces the Quick Launch bar, which in my case would hold more than 50 icons. But you can get the Quick Launch back. Just Google for it or see here:

It is still as buggy as before (not retaining icon positions initially) so it may take some time to set it up again after you reactivate it.

When you have an open file, right click its icon on the taskbar at the bottom and you can see where you can pin it to the taskbar - alias quicklaunch. You also have several options for getting all the info down there - such as right-click Start button > properties. In the Taskbar tab, choose "always combine, hide labels". Also "Use small icons" and you'll be able to add heaps of stuff as in the old quick launch.
