no backup devices despite removable drives being connected

Trying to create a system image - thought it'd be pretty straightforward using Win7's backup - but I can't seem to get past 1st base to find any drives: USB-connected, DVD, nor network (I have a NAS sitting out there).

Error message is not very illuminating - restarting backup & rebooting don't seem to cure the problem, but explorer can see & access all the drives just fine.

I guess I have to go back to a 2nd party product to do backups after all.
