This took me forever to figure out too. First, go to your control panel, click on hardware and sound. Then, look towards the bottom of the list and click on "Realtek HD Audio Manager." Click the tab that says microphone.

There will be a slide bar for the mic's volume. Turn it all the way up to maximum.

This is the best solution I've been able to find. The downside is that everytime you log out, the bar resets itself and you have to raise the volume again. There must be a way to change the default but I haven't figured that part out yet.
