Got free Win7 upgrade disk from HP after purchase on Sept 11 09 of HP Pavilion Elite 9120y (Vista Home Premium,64 bit). Package finally arrived – with an HP upgrade disk as well as the Win7 disk. Followed instructions (a one page sheet), uninstalled a couple programs; then the install hung at 62%. AFter 4 hours, tried to call HP at the support phone number on their instruction sheet.
That phone number was not valid, and the mechanical voice hung up on me. I tried a few times.
Finally called regular HP support number that came with the CPU. Took a lot of harassing to get to tech support.
The guy told me that files take a long time to install from Win7 upgrade. I said that instructions and other people’s report said appx 45 min.
He said that he and the other tech support people had had a one day training re: upgrade to Win7 – and that he had actually done a clean install from XP.
He said he really didn’t know about upgrade from Vista, as opposed to clean install.
He told me to wait, that there was a big file that was taking so long – and that was after he talked to supervisor.
He then said that I could take disk out, and restore Vista, and do a clean install, and lose my Vista REstore partition.
I said yeah, yeah.
Googled “Vista upgrade to Win 7 hangs at 62%” – bingo. A known issue.
Many many links to this error! there is a Microsoft patch or do-it-yourself fix, which I did.
Took out upgrade disk, rebooted, computer restored to Vista, i inserted the Win7 disk, did the upgrade in 45 min.
Now i have problem that the validation won’t accept my Vista M$ number as valid.
Guess that i will have to call M$, but I need to give myself a break from the all-day fiasco.
