Once upon a time there was an army of software writers who spent years of their lives creating programs to make using a computer a whole lot easier for themselves.
They were so proud of themselves, they wanted to share their success with the world.
Many didn’t even want anything in return, but were pleased to share their software for the “thank you”s others gave when allowed to use that software.
A few of these software authors even tried to market their software – good software, better than anything else out there on the market – but a HUGE mega-corporation with monopoly power either stole the code for their software and played a game of “hide the code inside a bunch of bloated gibberish and call it our own” or created a competing product and bundled it into their MONOPOLY operating system.
The end result was costly legal battles and monopoly market control that forced these independent software authors out of business & consumers to use second-rate products, because a FREE MARKET approach was corrupted by monopoly power.
Now, the HUGE monopoly corporation is whining about abuse and theft, after more than 2 decades of the very same behavior on their own part, and complaining because hackers and some of those same software authors & their friends they stole from – or drove out of business – have taken their revenge and enabled the public to use the bloatware without paying the exorbitant monopoly price the HUGE mega-corporation charges.
Some of those software writers were brilliant people denied a productive life, because they didn’t have the resources to battle a HUGE monopoly pirate organization.
Now they are poor people living lives without reaping the rewards of their creativity by getting PAID for their work.
I don’t necessarily condone theft, but something about karma and reaping what you sow comes to mind about now.
