Thank you for your response, but it did not help. I have no 'windows.old'.

If you had Vista basic installed, and bought the Windows 7 upgrade, you should find all your previous files, ( programs, pictures etc) in a folder right at the bottom of the list in C:, which will be called 'windows.old'. You can move those files across into the correct folders in windows 7, or save them off to another Drive or DVD. But note that the folder will have a lot of data in it!
