Gateway laptop freezes

I bought a gateway laptop nv44 series with Vista home edition 64 bit on it.

The laptop came with an upgrade option to win 7. Before the upgrade I was having trouble with the video but by using only the classic theme everything worked fine.

After the upgrade everything worked even when running aero but after about a month the laptop would freeze to the point where nothing worked.

I was left with a frozen screen no disk activity, no mouse, no keyboard nothing.

I have to do a forced shutdown to get it working.

I thought reinstalling win 7 would clear this up but no.

I can pass a whole evening without any problem but now and then it freezes and I have to do a forced reboot to get it working again.

It always freezes when opening a folder or having a program window open. It froze once on the login screen.
