Ex, (1989 to last year) Computer Tech

This is an FYI that you can use or just absorb.

I am a ex computer tech, retired but still active in a senior community as I help Seniors here with computer problems for free.

I recently emailed my ex employer regarding his Windows 7 experiences and got this back.Wow!***********************************************
"Windows 7 is starting to get better but I wouldn't load it yet.

We are seeing a lot of hardware failures with new systems running it.

It has only been out a month or so and we have replaced 3 brand new 500GB hard drives in each of them.

It seems like the same kinda problem we experienced over 12 years ago when DOS 6.2 came out with DOUBLESPACE.

We were killing hard drives then because of all the compression and decompression of files to and from the hard drive.

With windows 7 we see the hard drive light on almost all the time. Seems like the operating system is still so flakily - like Vista, that the software has to do multiple retries to accomplish certain tasks.

You do know that Microsoft, with Vista, used the same main kernel to make windows 7 ? Well Vista is awful but it is getting better.

With Vista, we got a pile of code that made your system run like a turtle.

Then we got service pack 1 for Vista and it helped a little. Now we have service pack 2 for Vista and it's a bit more stable but it is running so slow even with 4 Gigs of ram.

So ... that brings us to Windows 7 that is also running slow unless you have a Core II CPU with 4 or more Gigs of ram.

And ... Microsoft is implementing updates everyday to try to fix the problems that are reported daily.

Recovery of Windows 7 is also very hard to do so you better save your files and pictures on a DVD or you'll loose them forever.

Since Bill Gates stepped out, Microsoft is struggling with the worse pile of crap software since Windows 3.0.

Most of the Vista and Windows 7 systems that get infected with spyware, adware, malware, viruses and rootkits have to be reloaded from scratch. That means we spend more time reloading the operating system, hardware drivers, application programs, etc instead of repairing the infections.

Another thing we are having a lot of trouble with is getting the drivers for hardware for Vista and Windows 7. Many manufacturers don't even have the drivers written for them.

I ran into 2 systems this week that had HP all in one printers that would not work with Windows 7. I also ran into a situation with an Asus motherboard that we couldn't get the sound working.

Asus is still yet to provide Windows 7 drivers that work with this motherboard. We had to install a SoundBlaster live soundcard in the system because the intergraded sound on the motherboard didn't work with Windows 7.

They did have the drivers for XP and Vista though.

Two weeks ago I ran into a guy who was running AutoCAD 10 and that didn't work with Vista or Windows 7. Wow .... does Macintosh have those problems ??? NOT !!!!

It is very upsetting telling customers, after s crash, that all the documents and pictures they transferred to the Vista or Windows 7 systems that all their memories are lost forever.

We use to have control of repairing the operating system by reloading over the damaged software and bringing it back up. Not any more !!!

Son of a b....what next ? Seagate has a recall on most of their 1 Terabyte drives and HP has a recall on most of their DV1000, Dv2000, DV6000, Dv9000 and more of their Laptops.

Compaq also has a major recall on their Laptops. Do a search on google for "hp laptop recall". Vista and Windows 7 is KILLING THEM. About 75% of all systems that come in for repair now are laptops.

Most of them all have AMD processors. Stay away from those unless you want to waste your $$$. Sony and IBM are NOT selling any computers or laptops with AMD CPU's, they are only building them with INTEL processors..

If you want to smoke your hard drive or CPU, load up your system with Windows 7 and if your hard drive is older than 2 years old keep your fingers crossed and pray.

In my opinion it is not worth the price and/or aggravation at this time. Let Microsoft repair the quirks first.

Hell ... it took Microsoft 6 years to get Windows XP to work properly --- with service pack 3. Oh .... and there is no upgrade from XP to Vista or Windows 7.

Hmmmm isn't that a bummer?" I would be interested in your thoughts, at least to me.Thank You.
