Will it be possible to load Windows 7 over a "troubled" Vista Business system?

I do not like to shut the system down as it requires the disk for start up after the last big Vista update failed to configure properly.

I cannot uninstall as that fails as well and would like to avoid having to make copies of all my data,re-install all programs and start again.

This machine is only 7 months old.
