Not the AV
by: Anonymous

Thanks for the suggestion, but (unless some strange unique bug happened), I'm about 98% certain it was NOT connected to my AntiVirus software.

I use AVG Free - and had been using it for a month or so under Windows 7 without any problems.

I have since done a clean re-install of Windows 7 and AVG Free was the first thing I installed, and I haven't had any problems since either.

(I also use spyware guards, have left UAC turned on, etc.)

I have seen this problem reported on other web sites, and it has people completely confounded.

Some people managed to resolve it by rolling back graphics drivers, disabling IPHelper service, disabling IPv6 in favour of IPv4, editing a certain Microsoft regsitry entry, disabling ALL IE8 AddOns, disabling ALL Firefox AddOns.... etc. etc.

And some people never resolved it and said they resorted to a clean install.

I tried ALL of the above and couldn't resolve this issue, including some extra measures like uninstalling some Codecs, extra browsers like Chrome, plugins like Adobe AIR and Flash.

In the end, I surrendered and did a clean re-install...

Lots of people have had this issue, and it was originally reported by Beta Testers before Windows 7 was released.

It is a particularly nasty kind of error, because you don't get ANY crash dump, or even a BSOD informational page - the PC just freezes and stops responding, and you have to turn it off.

Perhaps why Microsoft has not addressed the issue.

What Antivirus product?
by: Anonymous

What antivirus product are you running? There are a lot of products that have this issue, including many that are labelled as 2010 products. Try to uninstall the A/V product and see if it resolves the issue. Immediately install Microsoft Security Essentials to protect yourself.
