Software Review: Oops Backup

There are several products on the market that allow you to back up your computer files continuously.

Some are (obviously) better than others.

Oops Backup by Altaro is one of the more impressive continuous-backup packages that I've come across and I'll tell you why.

Oops!Backup not only allows you to bring back lost, deleted or misplaced files. It also allows you to view past changes made to those files and to undo or adopt those changes.

This provides you with a full history of any changes made to a file, rather than only giving you the latest version of that file - and all in under 1 minute, with just a few simple clicks!

Oops!Backup keeps all versions of the files it backs up, and it does so using delta technology, meaning only the changes are saved. This reduces disk space requirements, often significantly.

When you need to restore a file, you choose a time from which to restore, and your files as they existed at that point are restored. There's no fancy scrolling à la Apple's Time Machine, but it's still an elegant process.

Another major perk is that despite the delta methodology, the latest version of a file is always available for restore--even if you have the backup drive attached to another computer that doesn't have Oops!Backup installed on it.

Some screenshots below...

Once you install and configure Oops!Backup, it runs in the background tracking the documents, photos and other files you are working with; when it detects any new versions of those files or changes within existing files, it will save a copy of those changes for you automatically, allowing you to reverse those changes back to any point in time!

The GUI is very intuitive. Altaro have done a great job with making it easy to use...

Some of the main benefits of Oops Backup:

Search Back in Time
With the Oops!Backup search capabilities you are not limited to searching for files that currently exist on your computer but you can also search all changed versions of your documents over time; this means you can search through all the changes you made to your Word document over time, for example. Unlike other traditional products where you have to first find the volume that contains the file you want and then find the file within that volume, the Oops!Backup Search Back in Time feature allows you to simply search for the file and, within a fraction of a second, you can start browsing the file and restore the version that you are interested in - just with a single click. No more laborious, time-intensive searches!

Use your existing external hard drive
Backup to USB or External Drive. With Oops!Backup you do not need to buy a separate external hard drive just for backups. Oops!Backup can make use of your existing external hard drive or optionally backup to your USB pen drive.

Backup to your network or NAS drive
Backup to USB or External Drive. If you have a network drive or a NAS then you can configure Oops!Backup to backup directly to it by mapping the network location to your computer. With this you can have multiple Oops!Backup installations backing up to a central server; something that is particularly useful for companies that want give document and file versioning capabilities to their employees.

Browse your backed up files directly from Windows Explorer
With Oops!Backup you can access and restore your latest backed up versions of your files using MS Windows Explorer. This means that if you plug your backup drive into a PC where Oops!Backup is not installed you can still access and restore your backed up files.

Plug & Protect – Automatically Backup to USB
It is not common for people to have their external hard drive connected all the time, especially laptop users. The Plug & Protect feature in Oops!Backup detects when you connect the external drive to your computer and automatically backs up your files to your external drive without your needing to take any action.

Integration with Microsoft Volume Shadow (VSS) Copy
Oops!Backup integrates with Microsoft Volume Shadow (VSS) technology. This integration allows Oops!Backup to automatically back up files that are currently open and in use.
