Shutdown procedures in Windows XP, Vista and 7

Each operating system shuts down in a different way. How confusing for users! Well here’s a few tips for a quick and easy shutdown.

First of all we’ll look at the common method. This involves using the Mouse. However, there is a second way just by using the keyboard. Personally, I prefer this method.

But, let’s start with the Mouse method.

Using the common method of shutdown

Windows XP

In Windows XP, do the following:

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. In the Start Menu select, Turn Off Computer.
  3. This opens the Turn off Computer window.
  4. In it, select Turn Off.

Windows Vista

In Windows Vista, do the following:

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. In the Start Menu, click the right facing arrow.
  3. This opens a pop-up menu containing the Shut Down command.
  4. Click Shut Down.

Windows 7

In Windows 7, do the following:

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. In the Start Menu, click the Shut down button.
  3. Windows 7 closes shutting down your computer.

Using the keyboard to shut down

There are certain keystroke combinations available in all versions of Windows that allow you to shut down Windows without using the mouse.

Windows XP

This involves using this keystroke combination.

Sequence: Win Key >U key > U key

Windows Vista

This involves using the Windows Key and the Right Arrow key.

Sequence: Win Key > Right Arrow > Right Arrow > Right Arrow > Enter key

Windows 7

This involves using three keys  the Windows key, the Right Arrow key and the Enter key.

Sequence: Win Key > Right Arrow > Enter key

So there you have it! Shutting down your computer should now present no problem.
