Windows 7: Article

More on Windows 7 Fonts Part 3

By John Campbell

Investigating the Options in the Font Window
In this article on Fonts and Windows 7, we’ll look closer to the first four of the options listed in the left-hand side of the Fonts window.

They are:

Fonts Settings
Let’s look at Font Settings first.

  1. Click Font Settings.
  2. This opens a dialog box containing two features –“Show and Hide” and “Installation Settings”.

Show and Hide Fonts
The default setting for “Show and hide fonts . . .”, does exactly as it says, it hides the non-English fonts. These are grayed out leaving only English Language fonts available.

To ensure that the foreign language fonts are hidden, make sure the check box is ticked.

Installation Settings
The second option in Font Settings allows you to save space on your computer by installing additional fonts as Shortcuts.

To save space, check the box labeled Allow fonts to be installed using a shortcut (advanced). The “Install as shortcut” command is added to the right-click context menu.

Installing a Font

  1. Select Install as shortcut.

  1. Windows begins installing the fonts.

  1. In the Font Window you will see the new fonts appear as Shortcuts.

This site contains many different fonts and it is free. Download a font, unzip it and install it.

Get more font information online
Selecting this option opens Microsoft’s Fonts for Windows.

This website provides general information on fonts. It is well worth checking out!

  1. Double-click Get more font information online.

  1. The Fonts for Windows webpage opens.

Adjust Clear Type Text
This feature uses a Windows Wizard. It takes you through a series of screens to compare various samples of text.

Follow the on-screen instructions.

  1. In the Fonts windows, in the left-hand side of the window, select Adjust Clear Type.

  1. This opens the Adjust Clear Type Text Wizard. It consists of seven screens. It is easy to use so follow the prompts,
  2. Click Next to move on.
  3. At the end the Wizard makes final adjustments to your computer.

This illustration shows you the series of screens in sequence.

Find a character
First of all, “What is a character?”

According to the Web Dictionary a character is “. . . a unit of information that roughly corresponds to a grapheme, grapheme-like unit, or symbol, such as in an alphabet or syllabary in the written form of a natural language.”

I have bolded the relevant words.

Here are two examples of Fonts – Calibri and Monotype Sorts. The former mostly contains letters while the latter is mainly symbols and numbers.

This is the Calibri Font list. It is one of Windows 7’s Fonts. It displays characters which include numbers, symbols and letters. This article is written using this font.

This is the Monotype Sorts Font list. It contains many useful symbols but it is not included in Windows 7’s Font list. As I need several of its symbols I have installed it on my computer.

Change Font Size

This feature is dealt in greater detail in my recent article, “So you have difficulty in seeing the Computer Screen?

Here you can learn how to change the Screen Size settings from Smaller to Medium to Larger.
