Apple releases new Ipad and immediately hurts ATT, Microsoft and Amazon

So, this is not an article about Windows 7.

This is however an article about how Microsoft got a knife poked deep into their ribs today. It’s a story of how AT&T will lose a TON of business and how Amazon’s kindle died at 10am this morning.

At 10 am Pacific today, Steve jobs revealed the Apple Ipad.

Characterized by Apple as:

The best way to experience the web, email, photos, and video. Hands down.

A large, high-resolution LED-backlit, IPS display. An incredibly responsive Multi-Touch screen. And an amazingly powerful, Apple-designed chip. All in a design that’s thin and light enough to take anywhere. iPad isn’t just the best device of its kind. It’s a whole new kind of device.

The device looks amazing.

It has the usual suspects integrated into it (Safari, Mail, Ipod, Itunes, App Store) and in addition:

Photos
With its crisp, vibrant display, and its unique software features, iPad is an extraordinary way to enjoy and share your photos. For example, the new Photos app displays the photos in an album as though they were in a stack. Just tap or pinch to open the stack, and the whole album opens up.

Then you can flip through your pictures, zoom in or out, or watch a slideshow. You can even use your iPad as a beautiful digital photo frame while your iPad is docked or charging. And there are lots of ways to import photos: you can sync them from your computer, download them from an email, or import them directly from your camera using the Apple Camera Connection Kit.

 

Video
The large, high-resolution screen makes iPad perfect for watching any kind of video: from HD movies and TV shows, to podcasts and music videos. You can also easily move between wide-screen and full-screen with a double-tap. And because it’s essentially one big screen, with no buttons or anything to distract you, the picture fills your line of sight. So you feel completely immersed in what you’re watching.

 

YouTube
The YouTube app organizes videos so they’re really easy to see and navigate. To watch one, you just tap it. When you’re watching in landscape, the video will automatically play in full screen. And with its high-resolution display, the latest YouTube HD videos will look amazing on iPad.

 

Ibooks
The iBooks app is a great, new way to read and buy books. Just download the app for free from the App Store, and you’ll be able to buy everything from classics to bestsellers from the built-in iBookstore. Once you’ve bought a book, it’s displayed on your Bookshelf. To read it, all you have to do is tap on it and it opens up. The high-resolution, LED-backlit screen displays everything in sharp, rich, color, so it’s very easy to read, even in low light.

 

Maps
See more of the world with high-resolution Satellite and Street View images. You can even see topography with the new Terrain view. You can also search for a nearby business type (for example, Restaurant) and then tap on that business to see the route and directions from your current location.

 

Notes
With its expansive display and large, on-screen keyboard, iPad makes jotting down notes easy. In landscape mode, you get not only a note-taking page but a list of all your notes. It even circles the current note in red. So you can see where you are at a glance.

 

Calendar
iPad makes it easy to keep on schedule by displaying Day, Week, Month or List views of your calendar. That way, you can see an overview of a whole month, or the details of a single day. iPad will even show multiple calendars at once, so you can manage work and family calendars at the same time

 

Contacts
The Contacts app on iPad makes finding names, numbers and other important information quicker and easier than ever before. A new view lets you see both your complete contact list, and a single contact, simultaneously. Need directions? Just tap on an address inside a contact and it’ll open Maps.

Looks great on paper huh?

Even if they get 75% of the stuff right, it looks like it’s going to be an amazing device but what does that mean for Microsoft, AT&T and Amazon?

Here’s my take.

AT&T

Adios amigos! I get to leave AT&T IMMEDIATELY. What the heck do i need an Iphone for when I can get an Ipad with wifi and no access plan.

I get to buy that Nokia I have been dreaming about on Verizon or T-Mobile and enjoy GOOD, CLEAR andCONSISTENT phone quality.

I guarantee that as soon as people get this in their hands (and it works as expected), there will be a stampede away from AT&T. Not a second too soon.

Amazon

Goodbye Kindle. It was nice and brief and sweet. Who needs a black and white kindle when you have a color screen that does all of the above?

Now, the new equation is Kindle = Betamax.

Great idea, too slow to adapt. I actually have a kindle too so it is personally sad. Oh well, there’s always Craigslist.

Microsoft

MSFT never had a horse in this race really but it is a sad day for Microsoft. The web was slow on all major tech sites today because Steve Jobs was announcing this. The market will go bananas and it will inevitably be sold out (even at that price point.

When was the last time we saw people going bananas for a Microsoft product? Windows 7 you respond. While 7 has sold very well, it still seemed to be a slow, respectful build up.

Apple are now established as the innovation company. Microsoft need to take notice and take that title back.

We want to go gaga for Microsoft apps and devices but so far……not so much…

That’s my take.
