Windows 7: Articles

A little more on god mode hacking in Windows 7

By John Campbell

No doubt you've heard about "godmode" which is a hack that provides immediate access to Control Panel options.

A recent article on this website, “Windows 7 god mode” on January 17, 2010, gave details about the main “godmode” hack that creates a folder containing all the command options from the Control Panel.

Creating a “godmode” folder
You can create this “godmode” Desktop icon by following these instructions:

  1. Right click on a blank area of your Desktop.
  2. When the Context menu opens, select New.
  3. In the side menu, select Folder.
  4. When the new folder appears on your Desktop, type in this string exactly as it appears: GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}
  5. Next, press the Enter key.

  1. The “godmode” icon opens on your Desktop.
  2. Double-click on it.
  3. “godmode” opens as a folder. It lists the main headings within the Control Panel. The number after each heading indicates the number of individual commands available in each category.

Individual “godmode” Hacks

As well as creating the “godmode” Desktop icon, you can create individual Desktop ones.

I have spent some time checking these strings to find out which ones are useful.

Two of them take you nowhere while the others open up individual Control Panel commands.

The table below show you how I rate them.

The New “godmode” icons
These are the individual “godmode” icons I’ve created using each of the strings. I have changed the name from plain “godmode” by adding a brief description in brackets.

Renaming a “godmode” icon
You can re-name any or all of the “godmode” icons you create. The illustration below shows you how.
